Annotations for Jamie muscato and carrie hope fletcher seventeen

Lyric: [J.D.]
 Can’t we be seventeen?
Annotation:
Here, J.D. is trying to keep on the path he’s chosen, basically asking if “we could be seventeen without me having to choose.” However he sounds hesitant when he says this, like he’s deciding still.

Lyric: Or they vanish

 [VERONICA]
And you’re right, that really blows
Annotation:
In the scene preceding this song, J.D. explains that his mother killed herself by going into an old library that she knew his dad was going to blow up. He acknowledges that she left him, vanishing from his life. Saying that it “really blows” was definitely some poor word choice on Veronica’s part.

Lyric: Maybe prom night

 [J.D.]
 Maybe dancing
Annotation:
Veronica and J.D. make a sort of unspoken promise here to go to prom together as a part of their new “normal” life. Later, during “ Meant To Be Yours,” J.D. shatters this promise as he destroys any real chance at his own normalcy in his plot to destroy the school.

Lyric: [VERONICA]
 So what’s it gonna be?
Annotation:
Here, Veronica gives J.D. the ultimatum – live a normal life with her at his side, or continue down the destructive path he’s made – by himself.

Lyric: [VERONICA]
I’ll stay if I’m what you choose
Annotation:
In a similar fashion to “ Our Love Is God” when J.D. calls for a response from Veronica at the end of the song, a beat plays as Veronica calls for J.D.’s response, albeit much softer and less violent-sounding than the former.

Lyric: I could be good with you
Annotation:
Note that it’s not “I could be good for you,” but rather “ with you.” Veronica believes that they can change for the better, and that they could best do it together.
